September 16th, 2006. What an absolutely unbelievable day of fishing this was. Zig had showed up late so we left the dock at 6:00am in the morning, a little light was beginning to show out and the wind was howling out of the NNE. Waves were about 1-3 feet and following. Fortunately it was behind us and we had no issues getting out there but it would be a problem later. The GPS gave me some trouble a couple of times on the way out and I had to power it off and play with it till it worked somewhat reliably. Zig and his son had been looking forward to this trip. I had taken out a friend of his (Tom Duffy) and Tom had told him about the early morning bass trip with plugs. He couldn’t wait to get out there and try it.Well, after making the 8 mile run we stopped and drifted across the sandbar at the northern tip of Block Island. I pulled out the first rod, cast out the plug and caught a bass while I was demonstrating to them the proper way of working the plug.

I handed the rod off to Zig and got another on down for his son and he started on his way. While I’m helping Zig bring his fish in the boat (a very large Bluefish) a big bass comes up and slams the plug his son is working. Line flies off the reel. He does a good job working this fish to the boat and meanwhile I catch a small bass (about 30″ long) and bring it in. Zig is working his plug again but we have drifted out of the zone and we need to go back around. So I start the motor and putz over there, as the waves over the top of the bar are probably 6-8′ high and you have to be careful crossing them in a 22′ boat. We setup for another drift and find the sweet spot where they are holding and immediately we have 3 fish on, all bass and they have shoulders. I’m listening to the line running off the reel on Zig’s outfit and I know that’s a big one.He is using a Shakespeare spinning rod and reel with power pro and it isn’t easy to bring in a big fish on this tackle.

The fish keeps taking more line than Zig can bring in. Meanwhile his son has been fighting what is probably another member of the same school and has the fish pretty close to the boat, then loses it. (we later learned that the fish had pulled the trailing treble hook off the plug!!) At this point Zig has his fish up close so I hand my rod to his son while I get Zig’s fish into the boat. I grab the net and try to net this fish and there just isn’t any way he’s fitting into it, and the net has naturally tangled on one of the treble hooks on the plug. I look at this fish and drop the net, scrambling to find the gaff before this monster realizes that it can break away with a shake of its head. The 4-6′ waves that we are riding aren’t making the job any easier, but it is completely forgotten in the excitement of how good this fishing is. I find the gaf and bring the fish into the boat, laying it on the deck. We all sit for a moment looking at it saying ‘oh my god that is a BIG fish’.

This Striped Bass weights 41.5 lbs and measures 50″ long. Zig brought the fish in on a 17lb class rod, a real accomplishment for a fish of this size. His son brings in a 38″ long 30lb fish and we boat that one too.

By this time we have naturally moved way out of the zone and need to motor back to the beginning of our drift. Again we cross over the waves, this time the motor keeps coming out of the water and we get a little wet from spray over the bow, but the guys say we’re staying, so we pass on through and start another drift. Again the activity is unbelievable, with fish coming to the surface and slamming plugs, fighting, and being brought to the boat. At one point we have 6 bass in the cooler, had to release one and threw back 3 bluefish. Another half dozen fish were hooked, fought for short periods of time and broke off. Then we went back for another drift and just as quickly as it turned on the bite turned off, and we got nothing on the next couple of drifts, not even a look. We kept at for a while, not wanting to give up, and not daring to go any farther because of the conditions.

Considering the weather and the amount of fish in the coolor, the guys were very happy (and a little beat up) and they wanted to go, so we headed back to the dock (well, ok, I was little beat up too). We had arrived on the spot at 6:55am, and fished until 8:00am, although the bite was over by around 7:28am. In that short time we had boated 3 Bluefish and 7 bass (all keeper size) and had had a chance at half dozen others. It was great. Then we had to face the long slow trip back to the dock. Block Island’s North rip can be very bad in a NE wind (it had shifted) and we were heading back directly into it. It took an hour and a half to get in, compared to 45 minutes on the way out. It was also a little wet. Upon returning to the dock, all Zig’s son could say was “that was unbelievable.” He kept saying it over and over and over again while I cleaned the fish. Of course, I agreed with him, it seemed unbelievable to catch the way we did under those conditions and in only about 35 minutes of successful fishing.

He called home and told them about it, of course they didn’t believe it. Not until they brought the fish and the pictures back home with them as proof (they kept the two biggest whole). Zig told me later he had the fish mounted and it now graces the wall in his home. It was the biggest Bass the taxidermist had seen that season. Pretty cool stuff. The key to this fishing is using topwater plugs, big waves, and getting on< the spot very early in the morning.

The method originated from an ancient fishing form called angling; the very reason why it’s called angling is because of the hook hanging at the end of the line of a fishing rod. Fly fishing has innovations of its own and the noticeable tool for this method is the use of artificial flies or the fly lures. Usually, artificial flies are tied with thread, feathers or fur but there are other options too which include ribbon, tinsel or beads and for extra weight, lead is used.

The reason why the artificial flies are “accessorized” is because specified species needs to be attracted. By using the right combination of the fly; which includes the size, weight and color, to the line, rod and reel, the chances of catching a desired species is high.

Color and size of the fly is mentioned because it adds to the fly’s camouflage effect, which is meant to imitate local insects, a main course for the fish (but this is done specifically to catch attention of aggressive, spawning species).

The size of the fly ranges from the largest (#2 ) to the smallest (very small at #22). The line to which the fly is hooked also plays an important relationship with the fly because primarily, it’s what casts the fly. It really depends on the purpose of the angler. There are heavy lines for sinking purposes and light ones as well to keep the fly afloat. In fact, a fly line can plainly be cast without a fly which makes it different from the basic fishing rod and reel method.

The significance of the fly is high in fly fishing since its main purpose is to act as a “food” for the species.

If you are out there fishing for rainbow or brown trout you are fishing for the largest trout you can find. If this is the case then perhaps you should try using a larger fly for your fly fishing expeditions. The larger the trout the more likely it is to want to consume larger meals. Large trout like to sit in deep slow water and tend to not use very much of their energy. This allows them to be opportunistic in their meal assertions so they will simply wait for a larger meal to happen by them. Unless food is especially abundant in their waters, it will often be more time and energy consuming to feed on small nymphs and flies then it is to wait for a larger meal to drift through. After a certain point in weight gain, the fish must move onto fewer but larger meals to continue.

Naturally therefore, if you want to go for bigger fish, try bigger trout flies and you will find you get some amazing results. Woolly Buggers and large wet flies often have dramatic results when compared to smaller varieties. It is also important to know that a little yellow on your fly can work wonders. When the water is cloudy for instance and the visibility is down you want the fish to be able to see your fly in order for a catch to be possible. Yellow is often regarded as a remarkable colour when fly fishing that tends to attract fish to strike even while not generally feeding. A little yellow in the tail of your trout flies can also be beneficial against the match the hatch rule. When there are a large group of flies present it can sometimes take an extremely long time before you get your first fish simply because there are millions of flies out there so your chances of being picked are lower. Using a fly that is similar for the most part, but has one striking element such as a small yellow bit in the tail, can really make the difference and coax the fish into choosing your fly over the real flies.

Black ant and black gnat trout flies are also essential fly fishing gear for those aiming for rainbow, brown or brook trout. Always carry a few black ants or black gnats with you as these have been well researched and found to be the most popular food of choice for more than 90% of brook, rainbow and brown trout. If the trout aren’t feeding on your usual assortment of flies, bring out a black ant or gnat and work them around rocks being careful to ensure they float naturally with the current. You can also try this lure under overhanging trees and branches. This type of fly is particularly effective during the summer months when these flies make up the largest proportion of the trout diet. In short, always make sure you have a variety of trout flies to hand.

Fly fishing for trout and viewing  gigantic blue whales in a Zodiac don’t usually go together but this Patagonia cruise on the MN Atmosphere manages both, and in style. The Andes and sea meet on the southern coast of Chile in a region of Patagonia famous for crystal clear mountain streams and big trout, and where blue whales can be seen in the Golf of Corcovado.  The Atmosphere is the only adventure cruise ship designed specifically to cruise the coast of Patagonia.

The 150 foot ship’s crew includes 9 expert fly fishing guides and a leading whale biologist, Gian Paolo Sanino, and they have two helicopters, a 30 foot rigid inflatible boat (RIB) designed for the Navy Seals in which to explore the most remote mountain streams and the marine coastline.  The Atmosphere was built by a young Chilean adventurer with a passion for fly fishing and it’s perfect for a Patagonia cruise among small remote bays with towering snow covered peaks above.  If the shoreline is too rugged for landing, the helicopters whisk passengers beyond the highest peaks, while the RIB can maneuver shallow or deep water.  There are also sea kayaks for quiet trips in sheltered coves and up coastal river valleys.



The vessel is a sleek work of art that provides sybaratic shelter.  While cruising the coast of Patagonia you can relax in the saltwater hot tubs or sauna, then have a massage.  Meals prepared by Chile’s top chefs and accompanied by excellent Sauvignon Blancs and Carmineres from the Chiles vineyards.  The cabins are relatively small and mostly have two single beds, but this is an expedition style adventure cruise and they’re certainly not spartan. There are three larger cabins with queen-sized beds.

The MN Atmospere sails from Puerto Montt, Chile, every Saturday afternoon from October through April. Puerto Montt is the gateway to the Pacific coast of Patagonia and gateway to the Patagonian Lake District.  There are connecting flights from Santiago to Puerto Montt several times a day.  The ship returns to Puerto Montt the following Saturday morning in time to make connecting flights north to Santiago or south to Punta Arenas, the gateway to the national parks of the southern  Andes.
