Fly Fishing Combo


Before you rush out and buy your hard earned money on a new fly fishing combo, you are going to have to think about whether or not you would be better suited by building a combo from scratch, or buying a setup that has already been matched from the manufacturer. There are perks to both, but for most beginner anglers, fly fishing combos will take out the frustrations of dealing with setting up the rod properly, as well as dealing with an unbalanced rod, once they get out on the water. This can easily fatigue an angler, and will make a great day on the water deteriorate quite rapidly.

A lot of anglers have a common misconception that fly fishing combo setups are actually low quality, thrown together by the manufacturer to try and make some sales. This just isn’t true. There are quite a few companies on the market that are putting out incredibly low quality products, but thankfully, the old saying, you get what you pay for rings incredibly true. If you are trying to save money, spend more time up front doing research, rather than buying the cheapest combo for fly fishing you can find.

However, if you are looking to get the best quality combos for fly fishing, then you will want to start looking at both the 5wt and 8wt rod lineups. These types of rods are excellent for both freshwater, and saltwater use. As a beginner angler, you should stick with the well known manufacturers, and avoid any fly fishing combo that is over $300 or so in price. This will help you ensure that you are going to enjoy the sport, and if you don’t end up continuing on, you can get your money back when you sell the rod. More expensive combos lose their value quite rapidly if not taken care of properly.
